The Art of Being Human

in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Sherry Simpson Dean

Introducing

The Fluent Human Framework.

Human Fluency is the language all humans possess. The Fluent Human Framework for living emphasizes the superpowers we're all born with—designed to build our proficiency with human connection, starting with our most central relationship—with ourselves.

While artificial intelligence can now generate poetry and compose music, only we as humans can experience the emotional, spiritual flow of energy that allows us to feel, to be exuberant or devastated, to be truly moved and inspired by one another, by other humans.

The age of AI requires a new human operating system—The Fluent Human Framework. The Framework consists of five interconnected pillars that mirror the natural arc of human development and guide us in a perpetual cycle of growth. So, what does it mean to be authentically, powerfully human?

This question has followed me through two decades of extraordinary conversations: from moderating the launch of an open-source data initiative for global development at the United Nations, to leading town halls on criminal justice reform, and teaching social entrepreneurship as a systemic reimagining of 21st century liberal arts college education to spending a decade in South Africa documenting how the power of song galvanized freedom by overcoming apartheid.

As an Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker, cultural strategist, researcher and educator, I've had the privilege of facilitating dialogues in the most unexpected places, with the most unlikely combinations of people. These hundreds of hours of conversations have culminated in The Fluent Human Framework, The Fluent Human Podcast and my first book, Calling All Humans The Art of Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence. I invite you to join me in test driving The Fluent Human Framework and checking out the podcast featuring innovators and luminaries dedicated to unleashing human potential for a better more just, kind and sustainable world.

5 Pillars of

The Fluent Human Framework

Pillar 1

Wonder

Wonder is the window into our future. As adults, the challenge is not to label ourselves unproductive or lost when we're uncertain, but to recognize that being in wonder is itself productive. It's the first step toward everything that follows.

We arrive in this world with a beginner's mind, open to the universe. A baby doesn't judge or categorize; they simply marvel. Wonder is the window into our future. As adults, the challenge is not to label ourselves unproductive or lost when we're uncertain, but to recognize that being in wonder is itself productive. It's the first step toward everything that follows.

Pillar 2

Explore

Life and survival depend on our inventiveness, on how we build our story—the plot, the choice of characters, the tensions and reversals. To build a story we have to gather ideas, begin to connect the dots. When we explore we discover new possibilities that resonate.

Pillar 3

Create

We are always creating. The power of creation is distinctly human. We're the only species that can imagine a future that doesn't yet exist and then direct our lives toward it. What if, instead of creating unconsciously, we became more intentional about wielding this power?

Be fluent in the language of being fully alive.

Contribute

Contribution isn't just about grand gestures or changing the world.

Since we're made of energy, we influence every room we enter just by the energy we bring. Who you show up as has impact, whether you're speaking or silent, whether you're aware of it or not.

The question becomes: how do you want to contribute your voice, your talents, your energy? Contributing feeds a deep human need and its why connection and community are crucial.

Release

The final pillar resets the entire system, allowing us to return to wonder with freedom and begin again.

Many cultures and religions emphasize release to achieve emotional healing, growth and freedom.  In ancient China, there were dedicated roles called "cultural sifters" or “fluent agents” who periodically reviewed what should be carried forward and what should be let go in order for the society to thrive.

The Pillar of Release is a practice that creates room for the new. Since humans are inclined to hold on to the past, Release requires a conscious intention and practice to let go and let in. It is essential for perpetual growth.

What Makes us Human

Is The Power of Storytelling

Sherry Simpson Dean has lived her life as a storyteller, having documented some of the world's most transformative historical moments (Fall of Apartheid, The Birth of Jazz in the US, The Rise of Hip Hop, The Civil War and The Lincoln Presidency). Sherry is an Emmy award winning filmmaker, investigative journalist, researcher and founder of The Fluent Human, a new framework for living, born of her life’s journey to understand the commonalties of what it means to be human.

The foundation of all of her work is the idea that human potential is a function of our ability to be seen and understood—to own our voice, to discover and to articulate our own story.

When we examine the roots of change in our own lives, we are inevitably led back to an unforgettable conversation, a song, a speech, a whisper that sparked a new perspective. In an instant we may see life differently. Sherry shares some of the synchronous moments in her own life as encouragement, and a demonstration of how the universe is assisting in the manifestation of life when we allow ourselves to imagine and to believe.
